Community Involvement
The following is a list of some of the volunteer and service activities that I have participated in over the years. For many of these activities, I was personally selected to volunteer and share my knowledge and experience.
- Pinellas County Homeless Court, January 2010
In an effort to better serve the Pinellas County community, I've agreed to volunteer for Homeless Court which takes place once a month on Saturday mornings. Homeless Court is a traveling Court that was created to assist homeless defendants handle petty criminal cases (in an efficient and non-punitive fashion) and obtain community-based services.
Led by Pinellas County Court Judges James Pierce and Lorraine Kelly, Homeless Court handles victimless crimes like minor misdemeanor offenses and city ordinance violations. For more information on Pinellas County's unique Homeless Court, please check out this recent write up on Bay News 9. - MDA Feather Sound "Lock Up," December 2009
In an effort to give back to the community, as well as raise funds for a very good cause, criminal defense attorney Aaron J. Slavin, Esq. has agreed to "go behind bars." On Wednesday, December 16, 2009, attorney Aaron J. Slavin, Esq. will be "arrested" at the SLAVIN LAW FIRM, handcuffed and transported to Jail. Once at jail, attorney Aaron J. Slavin, Esq. will be put into a standard-issued jail uniform and will remain there until his fundraising goal of $3,200.00 has been met.
In order to raise the necessary funds to "bond" out of jail, attorney Aaron J. Slavin, Esq. put a special call out to his friends and family as well as former clients of the SLAVIN LAW FIRM. In a pretty interesting and ironic twist, former SLAVIN LAW FIRM clients have been showing their gratitude to Mr. Slavin, as well as their willingness to donate to a good cause.

As one of the oldest leadership programs in America and a division of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce and its 501(c)(3) Foundation, Leadership St. Pete (LSP) is a dynamic, intensive, interactive, six-month experience designed to promote and enhance community leadership through an in-depth introduction to social, economic, business and political issues in the St. Petersburg area. - Mock Interviewer, Stetson University College of Law, Mock Interviewing Program, February 24, 2009.
At the request of Stetson University College of Law's Mock Interviewing Program, I volunteered a few hours of my time to help their law students improve their interviewing skills. During this Program, I conducted five 20-minute "interviews" of the students. During the first ten minutes of these "interviews," the students and I conducted an interview as if the student was applying for a clerkship position at the SLAVIN LAW FIRM. At the end of this ten minute period, we would end the "interview" and I would then critique the student's "interview" and/or provide them with feedback on how they could improve their interviewing skills. - Guest Speaker, Stetson University College of Law, Law & Order Society's "Gang Panel," October 27, 2008.
When the Law & Order Society at the Stetson University College of Law decided to host their first ever "Gang Panel," they invited me to speak about my experience prosecuting gang-related cases in Pinellas and Pasco counties. Along with three other guest speakers (including the current gang prosecutor, a gang investigator from the State Attorney's Office and a Detective from the St. Petersburg Police Department's Gang Intelligence Unit), our panel discussion focused on how to effectively prosecute and/or defend gang-related cases, as well as recent legislative changes that were enacted to assist law enforcement in their effort to combat gang violence. - Pinellas County Teen Court and Truancy Court Judge, January 2003 - January 2008.
During my tenure at the State Attorney's Office, I was a frequent Judge in both the Pinellas County Teen Court as well as the Pinellas County Truancy Court. Both Teen Court and Truancy Court are diversionary sentencing programs for juvenile offenders that have little or no criminal record. During these hearings, I was the Judge as the juvenile offender had his case heard before a jury of his peers (consisting of high school student volunteers). While guilt was not at issue, as the juvenile had to admit guilt prior to being approved for the program, the jury heard the juvenile offender's case and fashioned a sentence that usually included some combination of: community service, restitution, curfew, mandatory school attendance and/or an essay or letter of apology. - The Florida Bar's "Justice Teaching" program, Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School, Largo, Florida.
As a volunteer in the Florida Bar's "Justice Teaching" program, I had the opportunity to present lesson plans that focused on civics and the judicial system at an assigned local middle school. I found this program to be a rewarding experience where the students often looked up to their "Attorney" teacher. After each lesson plan, the students usually had a better idea of how the justice system works and how the roles of the judge, prosecutor and defense attorney all inter-connect. - Presenter at "Building the Case for Successful Prosecution," hosted by the United States Attorney's Office - Comprehensive Anti-Gang Initiative, in conjunction with Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), January 29-30, 2008, Tampa, Florida.
During my tenure as the Gang Unit prosecutor in Pinellas and Pasco Counties, I was asked by the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida to teach at their "Building the Case for Successful Prosecution" seminar. Along with an experienced Pasco County Sheriff's Office Vice and Narcotics detective, I taught a three hour block on gang prosecutions to a statewide audience of prosecutors, detectives, patrol officers and correctional personnel. - Lecture on DUI prosecution and courtroom testimony followed by Mock DUI Trial, November 20, 2007, St. Petersburg College, Police Academy. Invited by Officer Robbie Arkovich of the St. Petersburg Police Department Traffic Enforcement Unit.
Because of my specialization in DUI prosecutions, as well as my working relationship with the St. Petersburg Police Department's Traffic Enforcement Unit, it was requested that I assist in teaching police recruits the basics of DUI law and courtroom preparation and testimony. These sessions culminated in a mock trial where the recruit officers had the opportunity to testify (and be cross-examined) about a "mock DUI traffic stop" that they had witnessed as part of the class. - Guest Speaker, "Mock DUI Crash" at Shorecrest Preparatory School, April 10, 2007. Invited by the St. Petersburg Police Department and Shorecrest Preparatory School to speak to students about the crimes of DUI and DUI Manslaughter before prom and graduation.
As a member of the State Attorney's Office DUI Manslaughter Squad, I was invited to speak to high school students about the dangers of drinking and driving as well as the legal ramifications of being arrested for, and charged with, a DUI Manslaughter. This speaking engagement was part of a campaign to deter students from drinking and driving around prom-season and graduation. - Judge, Stetson University College of Law, Second Annual ATLA-Yerrid Trial Competition, March 4-5, 2006.
I was invited by the Stetson University College of Law to help judge their ATLA (Association of Trial Lawyers of America) Trial Competition. In this role, I evaluated and critiqued law students who were participating in a weekend-long trial competition. - Pinellas Park High School Trial Team, Attorney Coach, Fall 2003 - Spring 2004.
I was honored to be invited and able to assist the Pinellas Park High School's Mock Trial Team as they prepared for a statewide competition in Orlando. This Team, which was selected from students at the Pinellas Park High School's Criminal Justice Academy, was extremely impressive. Over the course of numerous weekend practice sessions, I was able to watch these select high school students improve their speaking and trial skills dramatically.
